Hammerich's House
Hammerichs Hus is a real time warp in the centre of Ærøskøbing. Here you'll find low-ceilinged living rooms, nooks and crannies and lots of atmosphere.
On the corner of Brogade and Gyden, you can visit the Red House, one of Ærøskøbing's well-preserved half-timbered houses.
This is where sculptor Gunnar Hammerich had his holiday home and collection from 1916 until his death in 1977. He wanted the house and collection to be preserved for posterity, so he bequeathed both to Ærøskøbing Municipality.
The deed of gift states, among other things, that "... the collection must be preserved as it now is and exists". The house's more than 2,500 artefacts are therefore still where Gunnar Hammerich has decided they should be.
In Ærøskøbing, Gunnar Hammerich helped open people's eyes to the value of the town's old houses. Hammerich's Hus therefore also tells the story of why Ærøskøbing is as well-preserved as it is today.
