Shelter in the winter - is it doable?
Did you know that you can easily sleep in shelters, even when the winter cold sets in? That's right. With the right preparation, sleeping in nature can actually be quite a magical experience, even if the calendar declares winter.
A shelter trip always requires preparation. But if you want to spend the night in the Funen shelters during the winter, there's just a few extra things you need to be prepared for.
But once the list is checked off, we're sure that you will have an unforgettable nature experience with the special silence of winter and a starry night sky.
1. Stay warm
Bring an insulated sleeping pad to protect against the cold and a good sleeping bag with a hood that you can lace up tight around your head. Remember to unroll the sleeping bag in good time so it can warm up from the fire.
2. Keep the fire going
Keep the fire going and make sure you have plenty of good, dry firewood. You might also want to bring a small woodclover. Then you can get the firewood properly chopped up and get a little sweat on your forehead.
3. Take advantage of the sunrays
You might want to choose a shelter in the sun rather than in the shade, as it allows you to take advantage of the warmth of the sun.
4. Layers
Wear warm clothes, preferably wool and in many layers - and remember an extra set in case your clothes get wet from rain or sweat during the day. Remember to also bring gloves, a hat/headband, and warm socks.
5. Without food and drink, a hero cannot think
A hot meal is worth its weight in gold - both in the evening, but perhaps especially on a bitterly cold morning. Oatmeal is a classic that can easily be spiced up with cinnamon sugar and apple - or pieces of dark chocolate.
You can also start the day with a hearty shot of protein with huevos rancheros over a fire.
Yes, the general rule is that you should absolutely indulge in all the delicious campfire food, hot drinks or snacks for that matter.
Have a great time!
